Sandra Ellen Martin
Sandra Ellen Martin (nee Hollinger) entered into rest in her 74th year at Grey Gables on Wednesday, January 31, 2018.
Beloved wife and soul mate of Elvin Martin. Much loved mother of Tony (Elizabeth) of Nanaimo, B.C., Randy (Kelly) of Smiths Falls, Ontario and Tanya (Brian) Chittick of Drayton, Ontario. Sandy dearly loved her grandchildren; Emily, Grace and James Martin of Nanaimo, B.C. and Adam and Megan Chittick of Drayton, Ontario. She was predeceased by Braeden Scott Chittick in infancy. Also predeceased by her parents Reginald and Dorothy Hollinger, her in laws Elton and Leah Martin, two sisters-in-law, Joan and Lenora Hollinger. She is survived by brothers Jim, Norman (Sharon), Roland (Phyllis), and David Hollinger. Also predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Oscar Gingrich and Isaiah Jacobs.
Many fond memories are cherished by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally Gingrich, Bert (Carol) Martin, Anna Metzger (John), Ruth Martin (Murray), Joyce Gingrich (Vern), Janice Jacobs, Ellie Moyers (Randy), Paul (Pat) Martin, Rick (Leona) Martin, Kathy Martin, and many nieces and nephews.
Sandy was a gentle soul who always put others ahead of herself. Her family was of utmost importance to her. In Elmira she was involved in starting the first Thrift Shop, and was involved in the Elmira Mental Health Chapter. She found furniture and household items for people who lacked some of the necessities of life. In 1975, she was selected the Citizen of the Year in Woolwich Township.
She enjoyed nature, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, travelling and seeing different parts of Canada and the U.S.A. on the back of a motorcycle. She was not afraid to express an opinion and could hold her own in a worthwhile argument. She had a lovely singing voice. She had a captivating smile and a hearty laugh. She was not afraid to laugh at herself.
In keeping with Sandy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be visitation at the McMillan & Jack Funeral Home, 291 Main Street East, Dundalk on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in Elmira at the Elmira Mennonite Church, 58 Church Street West on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Many thanks to the caregivers at Grey Gables and Rockwood Terrace for their loving care and support.
