Passed away peacefully in Dundalk on November 17, 2020 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer, in his 62nd year. Much loved husband of Joanne Thompson (Smith). Loving father of Jennifer (Steve) and Mike (Erin). Proud grandfather of Ryleigh, Bradyn, Jaxyn and Jaykob Thompson. Brother of Bob Thompson of Linwood and nephew Josh (Kathy) of Stouffville. Brother-in-law of Ria Thompson of Whitby and nephew Gregory (Cynthia). Son-in-law of Linda Smith of Shelburne. Brother-in-law of Cindy Claus of Cornwall and niece Jennifer Claus of Ottawa. Predeceased by his parents Verral and Ethel, brother Bill and father-in-law Avery Smith. John also leaves behind great-nephews Ronan, Rory, Benjamin and a great-niece Everleigh, as well as multiple generations of cousins.
John Thompson spent his entire life a proud citizen of Dundalk. He was a heavy truck mechanic by trade, apprenticing with Seeley and Arnill Construction. He continued his career within many different heavy truck garages; James Dick, Bolton, Ludlows International, Alliston and Lewis Motors, Alliston. He was also employed in management positions with Century Cable, Brampton, Sentrex Communications, Brampton and JTM Cable. He worked as a mechanic at VanAlstine Automotive.
After a career change he became volunteer Fire Chief in 1999 and worked part time with the Southgate Recreation Department. John has been a member of the Dundalk Fire Department since he joined at age of 18 in 1977. Spending the last 17 years as the Fire Chief, until his illness required him to step down from the position. John has always been active helping in many aspects within the community.
He was a coach in Dundalk Minor Hockey, an Executive member of the Dundalk Flyers Hockey Team, He ran March Break Minor Hockey Tournaments with Les Franks. He joined the Dundalk Legion in 1977 and was an Executive member and also instrumental in setting up the Beer Bottle return which is operated by the Dundalk Legion. Although he never became a Lions Club member, he was always there to assist with events taking place. He enjoyed bowling when the town had a Bowling Alley years ago, and always entering in Snowmobile Rallies and Poker Runs, Lions club Car Rallies, Legion Shuffleboard Tournaments, and helping with many events put on at the Dundalk Legion. John enjoyed deer hunting, fishing in the Owen Sound Salmon Derby, and camping. In his younger years he enjoyed car racing at Varney speedway. He was a well-respected member of the community, making many friends and acquaintances along life's way.
John will be missed by great friends and community members as well as Fire Department colleagues he has met through the Firefighters Association of Ontario and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date. A drive through visitation will be held at the Dundalk Fire Hall, 85 Dundalk Street, Dundalk on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Please remain in your vehicles as you pay your respects. *Mask or face coverings must be worn* Interment at Maple Grove Cemetery.
