Obituary for Delores Mary Hannon (Johnston)

Delores Mary Hannon (nee Johnston) passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023 at Grey Gables in Markdale Ontario. She was in her 92nd year.

Delores was predeceased by Howard, her husband of nearly 67 years, in 2020.
She is survived by her daughters Lori (Philip) and Sherri (Aaron) and her son Wayne. She will be missed by her five granddaughters; Carly (Nick) and Kristen, Samantha (Lyle), Alicia (Ben) and Emily (Tamir). She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Beth Johnston, as well as sister-in-law Dorothy Hannon.

Delores was born in Abbey, Saskatchewan on December 18, 1931 where her parents, Archie and Inga Johnston were wheat farmers. After several years during the depression of drought and crop failure, Archie and Inga came east in 1937 and settled near Proton Station near Archie’s family. They later purchased and moved to a farm at Wareham.

Delores attended school locally and continued on to secondary school in Flesherton where she graduated at the tender age of 17 and began her career as a teacher the next fall in the first of many one-room schoolhouses. In 1953, she and Howard were married and they moved to the farm west of Redickville where she resided until ill health necessitated a move to long term care in 2019.

After the birth of her first child, Delores gave up teaching for a few years and took on the role of Clerk for Melancthon township, the first woman to hold that position. She returned to teaching in the late 1960s and continued until her retirement in 1987.

Delores and Howard loved to dance and joined the Modern Square Dancing group in Honeywood when it was formed in the late 1960s. They made many friends square dancing and enjoyed trips to several locations around the globe with their square dance friends.

Delores was an avid quilter and sewist. She participated in the Markdale quilt guild for many years and leaves behind many beautiful creations.

Delores was a keen genealogist and spent many hours compiling the family tree so that family history could be passed along to future generations.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Grey Gables for the wonderful care they provided to Delores for the last 4 years.
